Transforming an historic listed building
The refurbishment of Bridge Chambers marks a significant milestone in Barnstaple's cultural regeneration and forms a key part of the wider Flourishing Barnstaple programme.
Delivered by Pearce Construction in partnership with The Bridge Trust and North Devon Council, the scheme has transformed part of the historic listed building into a vibrant, accessible cultural destination for the local community.
Supported by Arts Council England, the refurbishment includes a modernised performance space, upgraded workshop areas, new public facilities, and extensive accessibility improvements. These include step-free access to key areas, power-assisted entrances, and a platform lift designed to support inclusive access and safe evacuation.
Preserving one of Barnstaple's most historically significant buildings
External landscaping has introduced both stepped and sloped access routes, improving connectivity to the building, while internally the scheme has delivered 10 new public toilets, including fully accessible and ambulant facilities. The project also included a comprehensive upgrade of the building's services, including the installation of a new fire alarm system to bring the building in line with modern safety standards.
Completed through close collaboration between Pearce Construction, The Bridge Trust and North Devon Council, the refurbishment preserves one of Barnstaple's most historically significant buildings while creating a welcoming and flexible venue for performances, workshops, events and community activities. Bridge Chambers is now set to play a central role in the town's growing cultural offer and long-term regeneration.
